The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (POLYU) is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Hong Kong, dating back to the Hong Kong Government Advanced Institute of Technology, founded in 1937, which was the first government-funded institution to provide engineering education in Hong Kong. In 1947, it was renamed Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute. The Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute was established in 1972; In 1994, the Hong Kong University of Technology Ordinance came into effect and the university was renamed the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
